Sher A Hart:
Professional Editing Service
I prefer fiction, anything from clean adult fantasy and SF to rhyming poetry or children's literature from picture books through YA.
I eliminate mistakes--at reasonable rates.
What's in it for me? I love to read books, and I get to make them better. I've always had an eye for detail. Mistakes bother me, whether typos, missing words, misused words, formatting problems, repetition, lack of common or comma sense, and the list goes on. Logic flaws and plot holes bug me. I've read SF/fantasy since the age of nine, so I can tell if your concept is fresh.
Education and Training:
With a BS in Clinical Laboratory Science (specialist in microbiology and computer science with a minor in chemistry), I understand scientific jargon and technical writing. I started training with Emerald Coast Writers through critique groups, workshops and conferences. Later, I joined the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI). Many years of critique groups have taught me to catch all kinds of problems, including point of view slips and MFA in Writing rule violations. Believe it or not, choir directing helped me with poetry. Writers' Conferences keep me up to date on agent and publisher preferences while my reading walks keep me abreast of writing trends. For everything else, including formatting and book design, I refer to the Chicago Manual of Style and a large selection of reference books.
Give me a try. You can't lose with a free sample, up to five pages depending on book length. Send me the same pages you send other editors so you can compare apples to apples. Please use one inch margins, double spacing, and Times Roman or Courier font in either editable text or Word document. Although I can put notes in pdf files, I can't make changes unless I convert them back to text.
Editing Rates:
Proofreading: average $.006/word
Copy or line editing : $30/hr, minimum 1 hour. Developmental (content) editing: Send sample for estimate. Rates are subject to adjustment depending on type and amount of work needed. In case of schedule conflicts or budget limitations, I have a few editor trainees and a few fully-trained editor friends I work with. If you'd like a team for any reason, please ask. I use these opportunities for additional training of editing graduates until I'm sure they know all the rules colleges don't seem to teach.
